Energy storage

Our team has specialist experience of advising on a range of energy storage projects, both retro-fit and as part of more strategic grid orientated solutions, including the recent National Grid Enhanced Frequency Response where we advised on 40% of the successful projects, Firm Frequency Response and projects which utilise revenue 'stacking'.

For renewable energy to provide a viable alternative to fossil fuels, we need to develop a mix of generation and storage solutions. The move towards a subsidy free future and developments in battery storage technology have led to increased activity and interest in energy storage.

We work with developers, banks, funders, landowners, utility companies and contractors to provide advice across the project life cycle, including advising on contracts with National Grid, developing heads of terms, drafting robust project documents, site acquisitions and land documentation.

We are in discussions with potential funders to explore what might constitute a bankable revenue model for energy storage and can provide the corporate support needed to develop and implement your model.

We are associate members of the Electricity Storage Network.

  • Advising Grid Battery Storage Limited on a number of prospective sites for battery storage projects including one of the first in the UK to be granted planning consent; a 10 megawatt site at Rownhams in Hampshire.
  • Advising Low Carbon on its response to the National Grid Enhanced Frequency Response tender. This resulted in them being awarded a 40MW battery storage site in Glassenbury, Kent and a 10MW battery storage site in Cleator, Cumbria.
  • Advising a new market entrant on negotiating a bespoke contract with National Grid for providing a fast dynamic frequency response service.
  • Advising multiple renewable energy developers on preparing a suite of land documents for the proposed roll out of battery storage projects, together with the site specific documents for many projects.
  • Advising a number of solar and wind farm operators on project documentation for battery storage solutions, including supply and installation contracts.
  • Advising a number of  major renewables lenders on battery storage and STOR (Short-Term Operating Response) projects on solar and wind parks.
  • Advising multiple solar and wind farm contractors on remote monitoring solutions including SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition).
  • Advising a number of major banks on the consent and revenue sharing agreements for retro-fit of battery to existing ground mounted solar parks.
  • Providing financing advice to various solar installers in relation to installation of battery storage at four sites during Q1 2015, with a pipeline of new sites for installation later this year.
  • Advising a number of major developers on portfolios of site acquisitions for battery storage projects.
